Dog Food Storage Container: Keep the Original Bag?

You open a new bag of dry dog food, roll the top down and clip it shut. Then comes the question: should it stay in the bag, or would it be better inside a dog food storage container?

In many cases, the most practical answer is actually both.

The Original Bag Is More Useful Than It Looks

The original bag isn't just packaging. It's designed to store the food, and it also carries information you may need later, including the product name, lot number, best-by date and manufacturer details.

That information becomes especially useful if there's ever a recall or a problem with the food. The FDA therefore recommends keeping dry pet food in its original packaging when possible.

Where a Storage Container Still Helps

Keeping the original bag doesn't mean you have to leave it sitting loose in the pantry.

A practical setup is to close the bag properly and place the whole thing inside a clean, sealed outer container. This gives the bag some extra protection from the surrounding environment and can also help keep pests — or an overly interested dog — away from the food.

Dry dog food should still be kept somewhere cool and dry, away from excessive heat and moisture.

What If You Prefer to Pour the Food In?

You can also transfer dry dog food directly into another container.

If you do, the FDA recommends using a container that is clean, completely dry and has a snug-fitting lid. It's also worth keeping or photographing the original packaging information before throwing the bag away.

When one bag is finished, empty the container and clean and dry it before adding a new batch. This prevents crumbs and residual fats from the previous food being left behind.

Capacity Matters More Than It Seems

The other thing to consider is simply how much food you're trying to store.

If you prefer to pour the kibble directly into a container, keep it clean and dry, close it properly, save the important information from the bag, and clean the container before the next batch.

Neither method needs to be complicated. The better setup is the one that keeps the food properly stored and works realistically in your home.
